International law, like international humanitarian law, must always be respected.

According to the American bureau Report, this was stated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, commenting on the US and Israeli military operation against Iran at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation surrounding the Islamic Republic.

‘International law and international humanitarian law must always be respected. Therefore, as of this morning (28 February – ed.), I condemn the large-scale military strikes by the US and Israel on Iran,’ he said.

The Secretary-General called on all parties to immediately return to the negotiating table, ‘especially on Iran’s nuclear programme.’

Guterres also said he had no information confirming reports of the possible death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

‘I cannot confirm this information,’ he said.

On the morning of 28 February, Israel and the United States launched strikes on targets in Iran. In response, Iran fired missiles at Israeli territory. In addition, Iranian forces attacked 14 US military bases located in the Persian Gulf countries. Due to the situation in the Middle East, some countries in the region have temporarily closed their airspace.
