World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will meet with Prime Minister Shigeru Isiba and some senior government officials during her three-day visit to Japan. The talks will take place on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the Japanese government on Monday.

The visit comes at a time when the US’ aggressive tariff policies are creating uncertainty in global trade and economy. The purpose of the talks is to further strengthen cooperation between Japan and the WTO and to protect and enhance the multilateral trading system, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The Geneva-based WTO was described in the statement as “the cornerstone of a rules-based, free and open trading system.” Okonjo-Iweala is also scheduled to hold talks with Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yoji Muto.
