The European Commission has confirmed that Turkmenistan could play a role in the EU’s efforts to diversify gas supply sources through the Southern Gas Corridor.

This was reported to Trend by a source in the Commission.

According to the information received, energy relations between the EU and Turkmenistan are based on a 2008 memorandum that provides for cooperation in the areas of energy security, infrastructure of mutual interest, renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. A bilateral working group was set up to support regular dialogue, particularly on natural gas.

“As part of our REPowerEU plan, launched in 2022, our policy is to move away from Russian energy resources, given that Russia is using energy as a weapon and is waging a full-scale aggressive war against Ukraine. On 6 May, the Commission presented the REPowerEU roadmap, which provides for a coordinated, safe and gradual phase-out of imports of Russian gas, oil and nuclear energy. In June, we presented a legislative proposal which, once approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, will introduce a ban on Russian gas imports,” said the Commission representative.
