Negotiations between the European Commission and the Slovak government on energy supplies to the country took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere, and the parties will continue this discussion.

According to Report, citing Interfax, this was announced by EC spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen following the discussions.

“This meeting took place in the context of our dialogue with Slovakia and a number of other Member States. A high-level commission delegation led by the Director-General of the Directorate-General for Energy met on 3 July in Bratislava with the Deputy Prime Minister, as well as representatives of industry, gas network operators and market players,” she said at a briefing.

According to her, the purpose of the meeting was to prepare a basis for Slovakia to diversify its energy supply as part of the REPowerEU plan to phase out the EU’s dependence on Russian fossil fuel imports and to discuss technical and regulatory issues.

“The various challenges facing Slovakia are well known. We have been in dialogue with our colleagues for several months, in particular on energy prices, prospects for the energy market, and diversification efforts, including alternative supplies. This applies to gas, oil and nuclear energy. And the issue of energy security for our member states has always been our priority. This includes their interconnectivity and how we can ensure it,” Itkonen noted.
