The Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, arrived in Azerbaijan today on a visit. The visit is symbolic in terms of both timing and content, as bilateral relations are experiencing a noticeable upswing.
Cooperation between Baku and Ashgabat is developing in several key areas, from energy and logistics to political coordination and humanitarian ties. And it seems that the course towards rapprochement is becoming stable and mutually beneficial.
One of the most striking examples of a diplomatic breakthrough in recent years is the renaming of the disputed Kapaz/Serdar field to Dostlug (‘Friendship’). With this step, the parties have opened the way for joint energy work in the Caspian Sea.
Since 2021, after signing a memorandum of understanding, Baku and Ashgabat have been consistently developing cooperation in the exploration and development of this promising oil and gas field. In November 2023, the parties discussed SOCAR’s participation in projects at other fields in Turkmenistan, which already indicates increased trust and long-term plans.
