China responded at a UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting to US allegations that Chinese-origin “dual-use” components were used in the Houthi weapons program in Yemen. China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Sun Lei, stated that China “has always taken a prudent and responsible attitude” toward military exports and “strictly controls dual-use items, including drones.” He stressed that Chinese companies conduct normal economic and trade cooperation under WTO rules and “should not be unfairly targeted.” Sun, in turn, accused the US of violating international law by taking military actions against Yemen, causing “indelible pain to innocent civilians.” Representatives of several other countries also emphasized that any sanctions on Yemen must not harm civilians or impede humanitarian aid.
