China has stabilized grain production by maintaining a farmland limit of 1.8 billion mu (120 million hectares). This target has been secured through strict inspections, optimizing land use and increasing the proportion of high-quality farmland, Chinese Natural Resources Minister Guan Zhiou said on Tuesday.
Speaking after the closing meeting of the third session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Guan said that farmland protection work is integrated with rural ecological management, thus contributing to the improvement of rural areas.
Guan also said that 76 million mu (5.07 million hectares) of land has been restored under the Three-North Trench Forest Program. This initiative strengthens ecological security while providing economic and social benefits. Photovoltaic sand control, one of the innovative methods applied in this context, generates energy with solar panels and allows agriculture under the panels. Noting that the authorities have paid 1.5 billion yuan ($207.36 million) in salaries for anti-desertification efforts in Inner Mongolia, Guan said these efforts have provided jobs for more than 200,000 people and increased their incomes.
