The Chinese government has announced that it will step up efforts this year to stabilize the labor market and promote more full and quality employment. According to a Government Labor Report released on Wednesday, measures will be taken to ensure that people experience greater job satisfaction and security.
The report set a target of keeping the unemployment rate in urban areas at around 5.5 percent and providing employment for more than 12 million people in urban areas. Last year, about 12.56 million people were employed and the unemployment rate in urban areas averaged 5.1 percent. Emphasizing that employment is critical for people’s well-being, the report said that this year the employment-first policy will continue to be implemented and more financial support will be provided to provide more full and quality employment. More tax cuts, subsidies and wage cuts will be provided to companies in key sectors and small and medium-sized enterprises. Stronger support will be given to labor-intensive companies that can create more jobs, the report said. The government will also balance the relationship between the implementation of new technologies and the relocation of workers, and improve job services for university graduates, young entrepreneurs, demobilized military personnel and migrant workers. More assistance will be provided to people who find it difficult to find a job due to age or disability and to the long-term unemployed.
