Following the adoption of such important decisions as the allocation of a €90 billion loan to Kyiv and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, it is necessary to move on to negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

According to Report, this view was expressed by European Council President António Costa on the sidelines of an informal meeting of EU heads of state and government currently taking place in Cyprus.

“Now is the time to look ahead and prepare for the next step, which is the opening of the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union,” he said.

For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that Ukraine could receive the first tranche of the €45 billion loan as early as this quarter. She clarified that the first package of defence aid would include drones.

“Of course, we will continue to work to force Russia to return to genuine diplomacy to end the war,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, thanking all EU leaders for unanimously adopting decisions that are important for Kyiv.
