EU Council President António Costa said he is optimistic about Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

He stressed that the joint technical work being carried out by Kyiv and the European Commission is very important for the speedy completion of this process.

‘I cannot say whether it will be in 2027, or even in 2026, or later, but the important thing is that we cannot miss this moment. We must not waste time,’ he said, noting that the process of European integration is part of the peace process to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

‘This is not only necessary to strengthen peace after the war, but is also a key element of a future peace agreement. From this point of view, both Ukraine and the EU must work together to achieve this goal,’ he said.

According to Costa, it is impressive that Ukraine is carrying out reforms and adapting to European conditions in the midst of war. ‘This is very difficult for Ukraine. One can imagine what it means for a country at war to simultaneously carry out profound reforms for EU accession,’ he stressed.
