European Union member states are considering imposing retaliatory measures against the US over Greenland in the amount of €93 billion.
According to Report, this was reported by the British newspaper Financial Times (FT) with reference to European officials.
According to the newspaper, the second option for EU retaliation is to restrict access to the single market for American companies. It is noted that these plans are being developed ahead of meetings between European leaders and US President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week.
“If this continues and Trump uses purely mafia methods, there are clear tools of retaliation at hand,” one European diplomat told the publication. “At the same time, we want to publicly call for calm and give him the opportunity to take a step back.” According to the FT’s source, Brussels intends to use a “carrot and stick” approach.
As the newspaper emphasised, most EU countries want to resolve the dispute diplomatically before resorting to threats of retaliation.
“We need to reduce the tension,” said another European diplomat.
Another source told the publication that he hoped the possibility of retaliatory action by the European Union would increase pressure on the Trump administration from members of Congress.
