Georgia and Azerbaijan discussed expanding trade and strengthening cooperation in energy and transport at the 11th meeting of their Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, Georgian Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili said.

Kvrivishvili claimed that the talks focused on building on the momentum in bilateral economic relations, with particular attention to trade and cooperation in the electricity and gas sectors.

Transport connectivity was another central topic, including the two countries’ role in developing the Middle Corridor and regional transport networks.

“Georgia and Azerbaijan play a particularly important role and make a significant contribution to the Middle Corridor and the development of the regional transport network,” Kvrivishvili said.

She added that the commission discussed major transport projects, including the completion of Georgian Railway’s modernization and other initiatives intended to strengthen Georgia’s position as a regional transport hub.

Kvrivishvili said the Georgian government aims to double the capacity of the country’s port and rail networks by 2029. In that context, the talks also addressed the Anaklia deep-sea port project.
