Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen has announced his readiness to expand measures to strengthen the Arctic island’s defences, including the possibility of establishing a permanent NATO mission.

According to Report, citing Bloomberg, he made the announcement while speaking to the media in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk.

‘We want to strengthen security in the Arctic through important initiatives, including a NATO mission in Greenland, an increased military presence and more exercises. We are ready to discuss more, we are also ready to do more and to do so on a permanent basis,’ Nielsen said.

At the same time, the prime minister said he did not know the details of the agreement reached by US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. However, he stressed that only Greenland and Denmark can conclude agreements concerning the island.

On 21 January, US President Donald Trump decided not to impose new tariffs on a number of European countries from February amid agreements to start talks on Greenland. The decision was made after his talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.
