South Korea and Japan’s defense ministers will meet in Seoul on Monday, marking the first official visit by a Japanese defense minister to South Korea in a decade. The talks between Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back and his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani will take place on the sidelines of the Seoul Defense Dialogue, an annual security forum hosted by South Korea’s defense ministry.

During his two-day trip, Nakatani is scheduled to visit the National Cemetery in Seoul and the Navy’s 2nd Fleet command in Pyeongtaek, about 60 kilometers south of the capital. His visit was originally planned for December last year but was canceled after former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed martial law attempt.

Last month, Ahn and Nakatani agreed in phone talks to strengthen bilateral security cooperation as well as trilateral cooperation with the United States, and to meet soon for in-depth discussions. Their meeting also comes just days after the leaders of North Korea, Russia, and China jointly attended a major military parade in Beijing, signaling unity among them.
