A team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has inspected the damage caused by this morning’s drone strike on the central spent nuclear fuel storage facility near the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

According to Report, citing the IAEA, the attack caused significant structural damage to part of the fuel reception building, including the agency’s inspectors’ office located on the site. Experts recorded damage to the building’s façade, walls and staircase structures. Shards of glass, fragments of brick and other debris were found at the site.

At the same time, specialists confirmed that radiation levels at the site remain within normal limits, indicating that there was no radioactive contamination as a result of the incident. It is noted that at the time of the attack, the spent nuclear fuel was stored in containers several hundred metres away from the damaged building. According to experts, the containers located closer to the site were empty.

The IAEA also stated that it is not yet known when the facility will be able to resume receiving spent fuel from Ukraine’s operating nuclear power plants. The agency’s Director General, Rafael Grossi, described the incident as “extremely alarming” and emphasised that it poses a serious risk to nuclear safety.
