Road transport remains the backbone of Kyrgyzstan’s logistics sector.

Tatyana Rey-Belle, Director of the TIR and Transit Services Department at the International Road Transport Union (IRU), made these remarks in an exclusive interview with Trend.

“Road transport is the backbone of logistics in Kyrgyzstan – a mountainous, landlocked country – accounting for 90–95 per cent of the total volume of freight,” she said.

According to T. Rey-Belle, Kyrgyzstan has significant opportunities to develop its transit potential thanks to its advantageous geographical location and access to major freight flows from China.

“Kyrgyzstan is advantageously situated close to China, which gives it access to large volumes of freight, and is also a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, enabling the country’s transport sector to benefit from the delivery of goods to EAEU and CIS countries,” she noted.

T. Rey-Belle added that the IRU, in collaboration with its member organisation – the Association of International Road Carriers of the Kyrgyz Republic – and the relevant authorities, is focusing on several priority areas, including the simplification of cross-border procedures, digitalisation, and the formalisation and improvement of professional standards in the road transport sector.
