The Tajik government recently approved several long-term state programmes, with the documents on the development of cotton and silk production for 2026–2030 taking centre stage.
At the same time, initiatives were considered in the fields of rural libraries, energy, industry, tourism, official statistics and investment policy. Specific directives concerning the agricultural sector related to expanding second crops on irrigated land, building up seed stocks and implementing projects linked to the development of rural areas.
The decision to give special attention to the agricultural sector reflects its continuing importance to the country’s economy. According to official statistics, between January and May 2026, Tajikistan’s gross agricultural output amounted to 11.68 billion somoni (1.26 billion US dollars), an increase of 7.5 per cent compared with the same period last year. At the same time, crop production rose by 4.9 per cent to 3.79 billion somoni (US$409.66 million), whilst livestock production increased by 8.7 per cent, reaching 7.89 billion somoni (US$852.82 million).
The structure of production indicates that private households continue to play a leading role, accounting for 58.7 per cent of the country’s total agricultural output. A further 25.9 per cent is provided by dekhkan (farmer) holdings, whilst state-owned farms account for 15.4 per cent of production.
