Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korea’s new President Lee Jae-myung agreed to establish stable relations between the two countries in light of serious geopolitical developments in the region. The leaders also expressed their hope to meet face-to-face as soon as possible.

The two leaders held their first telephone conversation since Lee took office last week. During the approximately 25-minute conversation, the parties emphasized the importance of trilateral cooperation with the US. Statements from the Japanese and South Korean governments indicated that despite past disputes over wartime history and territorial disputes, the two countries have adopted a perspective of partnership in addressing global issues. According to the Japanese government, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his desire to further improve relations with South Korea during the conversation and proposed strengthening the existing foundation for cooperation. The South Korean Presidential Office announced that the two leaders agreed to build a “stronger and more mature” Korea-Japan relationship based on mutual respect, trust, and a responsible attitude.
