Japan’s chief negotiator Ryosei Akazawa cancelled a planned trip to the US at the last minute, delaying talks on Tokyo’s proposed US$550 billion investment package in exchange for tariff relief. Japanese government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi said administrative issues emerged during coordination with Washington. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had earlier stated that an announcement on Japan’s investment would be made this week. In July, Washington and Tokyo agreed to reduce tariffs on Japanese imports to 15 percent in return for the investment package, though details of the deal remain unclear.
