The European Union has decided to reduce the number of staff at the Russian Permanent Representation to the EU to 40.

According to the European bureau Report, this was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, at a press conference following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

‘Brussels does not intend to tolerate abuse of diplomatic status,’ Callas said. According to her, this decision is part of a broader strategy to put pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing war against Ukraine.

‘Diplomacy is always preferable to war, but after a year of negotiations, we have not even achieved a ceasefire. It is not Ukraine that is an obstacle to peace, but Russia,’ Callas stressed.

The EU considers it necessary to ‘shift the focus’ from pressure on Kyiv on the issue of territorial concessions to specific demands on Moscow. As Callas noted, the basic conditions for a just and sustainable peace include respect for internationally recognised borders, an end to sabotage, compensation for military damage and the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia.
