KTZ Express, a subsidiary of JSC ‘Kazakhstan Temir Zholy’ (KTZ), has organised the first multimodal shipment of containers carrying chemical products from the Japanese port of Kobe to Almaty, the company announced.
“The route, with a total length of around 6,000 kilometres, includes sea and rail sections: from the port of Kobe, the containers travel by sea for around 1,620 kilometres to Lianyungang in China, where, after customs clearance, the cargo is transhipped onto rail and travels a further 4,400 kilometres to Almaty,” the KTZ statement said.
Furthermore, it is noted that at the China-Kazakhstan border, via the Altynkol border crossing, the containers are transferred to rolling stock compatible with Kazakhstan’s railway gauge, after which the journey continues to the final destination.
The company reported that Lianyungang is one of the key links in the KTZ Express transport infrastructure in East Asia. The port is home to the Kazakhstan-China International Logistics Centre in Lianyungang — a joint terminal project between Kazakhstan and China, launched in 2014 as part of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative.
