When it comes to defence, Europe is as much a giant as it is in economics and politics, but it is a sleeping giant.
According to the European bureau Report, this was stated by EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, speaking at the annual conference of the European Defence Agency (EDA).
‘We live in a world where might is right, as many leaders noted last week in Davos. Our response to this is European independence, European autonomy and greater European responsibility for our own defence,’ Kubilius emphasised.
He recalled that the US National Defense Strategy published last week clearly identifies the Indo-Pacific region and the Western Hemisphere as priorities.
‘The Americans will reduce their presence on the European continent,’ the commissioner said.
According to him, this means that the European Union must ensure its own defence independence in a short time frame, without delays or reservations.
‘Independence means jointly building a European pillar in NATO – together in the European Union, together in NATO and together with Ukraine, building a strong economy and defence together,’ he said.
