South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump will hold their first summit in Washington on August 25 to discuss strengthening the bilateral alliance and enhancing cooperation in advanced industries. During his three-day U.S. visit starting August 24, Lee will address issues including peace on the Korean Peninsula, denuclearization, reinforcing combined deterrence, and cooperation in sectors such as semiconductors, batteries, and shipbuilding, as well as economic partnerships in high-tech and critical minerals. The summit follows a recent trade deal between Seoul and Washington, which reduced planned tariffs from 25% to 15% in exchange for a $350 billion investment pledge, $100 billion in U.S. energy purchases, and commitments to industrial cooperation. Talks will also touch on investment details, the future of the military alliance, and coordination on North Korea policy.
