EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has reiterated that Georgia is an EU candidate country only on paper, adding that the European Union will assess the situation in the country, including the issue of banning opposition parties, in its enlargement report later this year.
Kos made the remarks in response to a question from Tabula about Georgia’s halted EU integration, after Georgia applied for EU membership alongside Ukraine and Moldova. As part of the 2026 Enlargement Package, the European Commission will present indicative roadmaps for prospective candidates Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine.
“As you know, Georgia is a candidate country only on paper. I am sorry to say this and I wish that, given the enormous support of the Georgian people, Georgia today were at the same level as Moldova and Ukraine. How we continue moving forward with this country will largely depend on the position of the member states. However, a lot of what is happening in the country now will be presented in the enlargement reports at the end of October. You can imagine in which direction this will go,” Marta Kos said.
On October 6, the European Commission published the “Communication to the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions – Preparing for a Wider Union.”
