The European Commission has no plans to resume Russian gas supplies, despite calls from the US administration to do so, according to sources cited by *The New York Times*.

“As far as we are concerned, we are sticking to our previous position. And as President (of the European Commission, Ursula – ed.) von der Leyen clearly stated last week before the start of the European Council meeting, we will not lift any sanctions until Russia ends the war. This was stated in absolutely no uncertain terms,” she said.

She was asked whether this proposal from the US administration had been discussed with European officials, and whether the European Commission categorically ruled out the possibility of resuming imports of Russian gas “even in the context of a future peace settlement”.

Pinho recalled the conclusions of the EU summit on 15–16 October, “which reflect the position that the European Council regrets the United States’ earlier decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel fuel”.

“We remain convinced, as President von der Leyen also reiterated, that it is precisely coordinated action on both sides of the Atlantic on the issue of sanctions that can play a decisive role in bringing this war to an end,” the spokesperson added.
