Potential Russia-US summit to depend on US side — Lavrov

The prospect of holding a Russia-US summit in Budapest depends on the US side, which initiated the proposal, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated. He said that US President Donald Trump had suggested the meeting in Budapest to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who agreed to “go into the preparatory work.” Lavrov remarked that Russia responded, “yes, let’s agree how and where and when,” but noted that President Trump later “canceled” the invitation, which was subsequently clarified as “postponed.” Emphasizing that the next steps are “up to those who initiated the process,” Lavrov also mentioned a “good conversation” with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Russian President Putin had also affirmed on October 23 that the summit was “postponed rather than cancelled” and that the initiative had come from the US.
