Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed on Sunday to resume direct peace talks with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul. The statement was announced at a press conference for journalists in the Kremlin.
Putin emphasized that Russia is open to serious negotiations with Ukraine that would address the root causes of the current conflict and lay the foundations for a lasting peace. He also indicated that the possibility of a ceasefire agreement could be raised in the proposed talks. However, Putin underlined that such a ceasefire should only be sincerely implemented and scrupulously observed by both sides. Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Saturday that Kiev was ready for a “full and unconditional” 30-day ceasefire with Russia, effective as of Monday. The parties’ simultaneous messages raised hopes for the resumption of the long-suspended peace talks, with eyes now turning to a possible meeting in Istanbul.
