President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara on Tuesday, May 14. During the meeting, Erdoğan reiterated Turkey’s increased diplomatic efforts for a just and lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine and reiterated his call for a ceasefire.
In a statement released by the Presidency, it was emphasized that Erdoğan held talks with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkey maintained its neutral stance. “The current opportunity for peace should not be missed,” Erdoğan said. Touching on Turkey-NATO relations, Erdoğan underlined the importance Turkey attaches to NATO and stated that Turkey will assume the command of NATO Force in Kosovo (KFOR) again in the coming period. Erdoğan also called for more cooperation among NATO allies in the fight against terrorism. NATO Secretary General Rutte said on the social media platform X that his meeting with Erdogan took place as part of the preparations for the upcoming NATO summit. “Turkey is a committed and competent ally. On Ukraine, there is a real window of opportunity for peace.”
