According to the Balkan bureau of Report, this was announced by Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Jedović, during a meeting with a delegation from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

She noted that, due to the reduction in electricity generation at coal-fired thermal power stations, investment in base-load power generation capacity is necessary.

“We therefore view nuclear power and gas-fired power stations as an important part of the energy mix. Ensuring a sufficient supply of electricity in the near future is our most important task, and this process will be carried out in parallel with the sustainable integration of new capacity from renewable energy sources,” she said.

The Minister also announced that Serbia has earmarked investments totalling €1.6 billion for the development and modernisation of gas infrastructure.

“Diversifying gas supplies and strengthening regional ties are particularly important. In this regard, cooperation is envisaged, primarily with Romania and North Macedonia. These steps will further strengthen the security of supply amid geopolitical tensions and market instability,” emphasised D. Jedović.

She added that Serbia is committed to the goal of generating 45 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by the end of the decade.
