Xi, Putin laud bilateral ties, vow further cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged in Beijing to further strengthen China-Russia relations, emphasizing high-level exchanges, mutual support, and strategic coordination. Xi described the relationship as one based on lasting friendship, comprehensive coordination, and mutually beneficial cooperation. He stressed the need to leverage major projects as drivers of cooperation, deepen integration of interests, and enhance resilience in bilateral ties.

Bilateral trade reached $244.8 billion in 2024, with China remaining Russia’s largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years. The leaders also highlighted their joint participation in WWII commemorations, underscoring their commitment to defending historical truth and the outcomes of victory. Xi introduced his newly proposed Global Governance Initiative (GGI), aimed at building a fairer global governance system grounded in equality, international law, multilateralism, and real action.

Putin praised the historic high of Russia-China relations, calling them of great strategic significance. He welcomed Xi’s GGI as a timely and necessary proposal to address the global governance deficit. He also affirmed Russia’s readiness to maintain strategic coordination, deepen exchanges, and expand cooperation across various fields including energy, space, AI, agriculture, health, education, and media. At the end of the talks, the two sides signed more than 20 cooperation agreements.
