Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani will visit Washington, marking the first trip by a Syrian foreign minister to the U.S. in over 25 years. He will hold talks in Congress on lifting remaining sanctions, including the repeal of the 2020 “Caesar Act.” Al-Sheibani is expected to meet with senators, including Lindsey Graham, who conditioned support on Syria joining the anti-ISIS coalition and advancing toward a new security deal with Israel. On Friday, he will meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The visit follows earlier London talks with Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, mediated by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, on a possible security agreement.
