The countries of the European Union have agreed to open the first round of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. According to the European bureau of Report, this is stated in a joint statement by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
At the first intergovernmental conference, to be held on Monday 15 June, the first of six main chapters will be opened – the foundational chapter, covering the EU’s key principles and values, including the rule of law and democratic institutions. Costa and von der Leyen stated that the decision reflects both countries’ efforts to implement reforms despite serious challenges.
This will bring stability and economic opportunities to the countries, whilst for the EU, enlargement remains a strategic priority that contributes to strengthening security, peace and prosperity on the continent, the statement said.
