On Monday 28 July, the European External Action Service (EEAS) summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires to the EU in response to Russian drones violating Romanian airspace and an attack on the Latvian honorary consulate in Ukraine.
According to the European bureau of Report, this was announced by Anwar Al Anouni, a spokesperson for the EU’s foreign policy service, at a briefing in Brussels.
“Today we summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires to the EEAS,” he said, adding that a strong protest had been lodged with the Russian side over the “deliberate violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones”.
According to him, such actions constitute a “serious escalation” and threaten the safety of EU citizens, regional stability and international peace.
Brussels also reaffirmed its “full solidarity and support” for Romania and Latvia.
The EU’s External Action Service, according to its spokesperson, will continue to provide support to Ukraine and step up pressure on Moscow. Al Anuni noted that the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, had already put forward a new proposal to further tighten the sanctions regime against Russia.
