The IAEA is holding talks with Russia and Ukraine on localised ceasefires required to carry out repair work on damaged power lines at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

According to Report, the agency’s Director General, Rafael Grossi, announced this in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He said that these agreements are necessary to ensure the safe repair of the power lines supplying external electricity to the plant.

Grossi noted that whilst the ZNPP’s external power supply remains unstable, the IAEA is helping to maintain the operation of backup systems. In particular, the agency is facilitating the supply of fuel for emergency generators, which may be required in the event of another disconnection of the plant from the power grid.

According to the IAEA Director General, the need for these measures stems from the ongoing hostilities in the vicinity of the plant, which are causing damage to power lines and leading to disruptions in the Zaporizhzhia NPP’s external power supply.

The Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest nuclear power station in Europe and has six power units. It has not generated electricity since 11 September 2022. All six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia NPP are in cold shutdown mode.
