The US, Canada and European NATO allies are prepared to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, but only once a peace agreement has been reached with Russia.
According to Report, citing Interfax, this was stated by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
He said that work on the security guarantee mechanism is being carried out within the framework of a ‘coalition of the willing’, led by the UK and France.
He noted that, once a peace agreement or a long-term ceasefire has been reached, it is essential to rule out the possibility of a recurrence of the situation that could lead to renewed hostilities.
Earlier, the countries of the “coalition of the willing” and the US agreed on the key elements of the future system of guarantees. These include a ceasefire monitoring mechanism led by Washington, continued support for the Ukrainian army, the possibility of deploying multinational forces, and a commitment to provide assistance to Ukraine in the event of further military action in the future.
