U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Russian oil exports are “way down” as a result of sanctions. Speaking at a meeting with leaders from five Central Asian nations, Trump said, “Russian exports are substantially down,” in response to a question about the impact of U.S. restrictions, though he did not provide a source for the information. The U.S. President also stated that Washington seeks to resolve the Ukraine conflict and expressed his belief that Russian authorities “are going to get very smart and they’re going to do that” at “some point.” In late October, the U.S. Treasury Department blacklisted the Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, along with 34 of their subsidiaries. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously stated the sanctions would not have a significant economic impact but would damage bilateral relations.
