US President Donald Trump held a closed-door meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Report reports this, citing the Associated Press.
The talks took place against the backdrop of statements by the White House chief regarding the possibility of the US withdrawing from NATO. As previously reported, the parties were due to discuss the resumption of safe shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Later, in an interview with CNN, Rutte stated that during their conversation, Trump had expressed disappointment at the actions of some of Washington’s NATO allies in the context of the operation in Iran, and noted that he understood the American leader’s dissatisfaction.
“He is clearly disappointed with many NATO allies; I can understand him. At the same time, I was able to point out that most European countries have been helpful in terms of bases, logistics and flights, ensuring that they are honouring their commitments,” said the alliance’s Secretary General.
Earlier, Trump told ABC News that Washington’s call for NATO partners to join a military operation against Iran was a test for the alliance, but that the bloc had failed it.
