Turkmenistan and the Maldives discussed expanding cooperation in the fields of transport, tourism and trade during a meeting between senior diplomats.
This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan following a meeting in Malé between Shalar Geldynazarov, Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to the Maldives, and Iru Fatimat Adam, the Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to the ministry, the parties reviewed prospects for cooperation in the political, diplomatic, trade and economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres. Particular attention was paid to opportunities for cooperation in the fields of transport, communications and tourism. The importance of coordinating actions within the framework of international organisations was also emphasised.
Furthermore, the parties agreed to maintain regular contacts between their foreign ministries to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Recently, Turkmenistan has stepped up its diplomatic engagement with the island states of the Indian Ocean as part of a strategy to diversify its international economic ties beyond traditional regional markets. Alongside political dialogue, Ashgabat is paying increasing attention to practical cooperation in the fields of tourism, transport connectivity, trade and logistics, viewing these areas as new drivers of bilateral relations.
