Jordan has turned away from France and chosen Kazakhstan, the world’s top uranium producer, as its strategic partner to develop its uranium reserves. Kazakhstan will conduct geological exploration in Jordan until 2026, and if results are favorable, a joint venture will be established with Kazatomprom holding 70% and Jordan’s state-owned Jumco 30%.

The deal comes amid soaring uranium demand and prices, driven by the global energy transition. According to OECD and IAEA, Jordan holds about 62,000–70,000 tons of uranium reserves, worth at least $6.3 billion at current prices.

Jordan’s past cooperation with France’s Areva ended in scandal in 2012, undermining trust in European partners. Now, Kazakhstan — as both a global uranium leader and an expanding international player — offers Amman a reliable ally. For Jordan, the partnership is key to energy security, while for Kazakhstan it reinforces its role as a global force shaping uranium market dynamics.
