Following the “Zapad-2025” drills in Belarus, discussions in Uzbekistan have resurfaced about the possibility of rejoining the CSTO, whose membership it suspended in 2012. While not a formal member, Tashkent maintains close military and strategic cooperation with Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Belarus. At the same time, Uzbekistan is deepening ties with the EU through an Enhanced Partnership Agreement, pursuing a multi-vector foreign policy based on neutrality and mutual benefit. Analysts note, however, that rejoining the CSTO could strengthen Uzbekistan’s security in the face of growing threats from terrorist groups in Afghanistan.
