‘IT WILL BE THE VENUE FOR SETTLING SCORES’
ANKASAM President Prof. Mehmet Seyfettin Erol: The summit, taking place at a time when discussions on NATO’s mission and vision are being laid bare in the most radical sense and internal alliance fractures are coming to the surface, appears poised to become the venue for a long-overdue, multifaceted reckoning between the United States and its European allies. The U.S. is seeking to transform NATO. Trump’s personal attendance at the summit underscores the U.S. intention to reshape, fundamentally alter, and restructure this alliance according to its own terms, as well as its aim to dictate the conditions of alliance. Ankara is set to host a summit where the U.S. will attempt to dictate the conditions for remaining in NATO; where Trump will seek to formalize the goal of allies allocating five percent of their GDP to defense as an official commitment, and where he will likely force this through by urging them to “put their money where their mouth is.”
