European Council President António Costa stated at a press conference in Sofia, following talks with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Jelyazkov, that EU enlargement is the most important geopolitical investment the Union must make. He emphasized that the process should start with Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans, noting that although countries progress at different speeds, integration must continue. Enlargement plans provide incentives and financial support to candidate countries, and the EU should not lose this momentum. Jelyazkov stressed that integrating the Western Balkans is a strategic priority that ensures greater security and development. He added that North Macedonia’s only path to EU membership is through implementing the July 2022 agreements without revision. Costa agreed, underlining that commitments must be fulfilled.
