China congratulated Anutin Charnvirakul on becoming Thailand’s new Prime Minister and expressed readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that China and Thailand remain close neighbors and “like one family.”
Veteran politician Anutin was elected as Thailand’s 32nd prime minister after Paetongtarn Shinawatra was dismissed by the Constitutional Court for ethical violations. Backed by 143 votes from the People’s Party and 146 from other parties, Anutin now leads a minority government.
Anutin, of Chinese descent, has consistently highlighted his cultural ties with China. In a 2023 interview, he welcomed the return of Chinese tourists to Thailand and expressed pride in his heritage. Analysts note that under Anutin, China-Thailand relations are expected to remain stable and even deepen, as closer cooperation with China is seen as vital for Thailand’s political stability and economic recovery amid global challenges and US tariff threats.
