Given the importance of recent events and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days.
According to the European bureau Report, this was announced late on Sunday evening by the President of the European Council, António Costa, on his Twitter account.
Costa convened an extraordinary meeting of the European Council after Sunday’s meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels.
According to EU sources, the meeting may take place on Thursday, January 22, with heads of state and government expected to arrive in Brussels in person.
According to the President of the European Council, consultations with member states on the latest developments in Greenland confirmed the EU’s strong commitment to supporting and standing in solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, and its confidence that the tariffs announced by the US leader would undermine transatlantic relations and be incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement.
