Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s official visit to the United States has begun, marking what is seen as a turning point in international diplomacy. The invitation from Donald Trump is viewed as a sign of Azerbaijan’s growing influence on both regional and global levels.

Talks between Baku and Washington cover a wide range of issues, including energy, infrastructure, defense, and digital transformation. After consolidating its position following the 2020 war, Azerbaijan now aims to act as a bridge between East and West. Since 2016, Aliyev and Trump have maintained a unique channel of dialogue beyond standard diplomacy.

A major focus of the visit is the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is also expected to join upcoming discussions in Washington. Key agenda items include the Zangezur Corridor, possible constitutional reforms in Armenia, and the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group. Reports suggest that the U.S. may seek long-term control of the Zangezur route, underscoring its strategic significance.

Observers draw parallels with the 1978 Camp David Accords. Relations under Joe Biden’s administration were strained after the revival of Section 907, which Baku saw as an outdated and unfair pressure tactic. Now, Azerbaijan–U.S. relations rest on three pillars: energy partnership, technological cooperation, and security. While the final outcomes of the visit remain to be seen, it is already considered an important step toward balanced diplomacy and potentially lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
