China announced that it has successfully completed its first comprehensive test of landing and takeoff capabilities for a crewed lunar lander at a dedicated site in Huailai County, Hebei Province.
The lander, named “Lanyue” (“Embracing the Moon”), consists of a landing module and a propulsion module. It is designed to transport two taikonauts between lunar orbit and the Moon’s surface, while also carrying a lunar rover and various scientific payloads.
After touching down, the lander will serve as a life-support center, energy hub, and data center for astronauts during their surface missions. Officials noted that the test was technically complex, required a long preparation cycle, and presented significant engineering challenges.
This achievement marks a milestone in China’s crewed lunar exploration program, demonstrating the country’s growing ability to perform human extraterrestrial landing and ascent operations.
China plans to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030 to carry out scientific research and exploration missions.
