At the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi strongly criticized the tariff and trade wars initiated by the Washington administration, emphasizing the vital importance of safeguarding multilateral trade rules.
“If we remain silent and make compromises, bullies will only be emboldened to go further,” Wang said, adding that the United States has reaped major benefits from free trade for many years, but is now using it as a tool to pressure other countries. Wang called on BRICS countries to jointly oppose all forms of protectionism and to firmly uphold the rules-based multilateral trade system centered around the World Trade Organization (WTO). In a statement released after the meeting, China’s Foreign Ministry noted that other BRICS countries expressed support for China’s global initiatives and agreed that BRICS should oppose power politics and double standards. The statement also highlighted that BRICS nations reached a consensus on protecting the legitimate rights of member states and the common interests of the Global South, building a fairer and more equitable international order, and promoting open, inclusive, and sustainable development. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, who hosted the meeting, stated that BRICS is uniquely positioned to promote peace and stability based on dialogue, development, and multilateral cooperation. “We support diplomacy over confrontation, cooperation over unilateralism,” Vieira added.
