Bulgaria intends, with the assistance of the US, Turkey and Romania, to determine the origin of the drones that attacked two merchant ships in its exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.

According to Report, citing Bulgarian media, the country’s Prime Minister Rumen Radev made this statement following a meeting of the National Security Advisory Council.

He said that, at present, Sofia has no evidence to conclusively assert that Russia was behind the attack.

“When it comes to matters of national security, we cannot operate on the basis of hypotheses,” Radev emphasised.

The Bulgarian side plans, in cooperation with Turkey and Romania and with possible assistance from the US, to survey the areas where the vessels Able and Alfa Watan were attacked. The authorities hope to locate the wreckage of the drones and establish their origin.

The Able remains afloat, whilst the Alfa Watan sank following the attack.

Radev noted that the results of the investigation should make it possible to determine whether the drones belonged to Russia or Ukraine.
