China’s Foreign Ministry announced that 26 foreign heads of state and government will attend a major military parade in Beijing on September 3, marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. Attendees include Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Iranian President Masoud Pezashkian, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong, and Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong. The UN will be represented by Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua. No major Western or EU leaders are attending, except Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. President Xi Jinping will oversee tens of thousands of troops at Tiananmen Square. Kim Jong Un’s participation is considered “quite unusual” and could provide him an opportunity to raise his international profile while signaling deeper alignment with China and Russia. The parade will showcase China’s advanced military hardware and symbolize solidarity between China, Russia, and the Global South.
