European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday. During the meeting, both sides expressed their determination to deepen cooperation and respond jointly to global challenges.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU) and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Noting that the international environment is becoming increasingly complex and challenging, Wang emphasized that China and the EU, as two major civilizations and global powers, should increase communication, strengthen mutual trust, take responsibility, and contribute to global stability and predictability. Describing the upcoming China-EU Leaders’ Summit as “an important meeting taking place at a critical time,” Wang said that China hopes to work with the EU to evaluate the experiences of the past 50 years, shape a vision for cooperation in the next 50 years, and send an open, positive, and constructive message to the world.
